FAQ's

Preloved Books Service

At A S Bookshelf we like to explore options to lessen our environmental impact where we can. If you have bought a book (or maybe several books) from us, or you have books from authors that we stock, which you can't keep on your shelves any longer - we are interested in finding them a new home.

We know that most of us might only read the books we buy once, and then keep them on the shelf for decoration, or maybe nostalgia (Or to show off. Don't worry, we do that too). Plenty of us go to second hand shops with the hope of finding one of the titles or authors we want, knowing full well that we will mostly end up rummaging through endless piles of our grandparents old romantic novels with damsels in distress and Fabio-esc looking men on the front page. Finding radical thinkers or world changing ideas is an equally  as fun and tiresome treasure hunt. And, although the glorious sensation of chancing upon such a rare find is hard to beat, we believe world changing books should have easier access than that! So we have made space for our Preloved Books Service. Saving you a tiny bit of time, a tiny bit of money and hopefully a tiny bit on the environment by limiting the print of new books!

Depending on the condition of the book that you would like to sell or sell back to us, we could pay you up to 20% of the recommended retail price for each book.

Please read the how to guide below, as well as our Preloved Books Service Terms and Conditions that are specific for using this service, before you start sending books to us! We will not be liable for returning or paying for any books or other items that we have not explicitly accepted to receive or pay for.

How to use the Preloved Books Service

If you have books that you have bought from us (www.asbookshelf.co.uk), have books written by authors that we currently stock, or have books which are in line with our book shop's values and aim, that are in good condition and you would like to use our Preloved Books Service, please follow the steps set out below.

1. Let us know what books you wish to sell

Send an email to contact@asbookshelf.co.uk with the subject "Preloved Book Service"

Make sure your email contains;

  • ISBN number of each book you wish to sell

  • Title and Author of each book you wish to sell

  • A clear picture of the front, the back, the spine and the long side of the book showing the pages, for each book you wish to sell. If you put several books in one picture make sure it is clearly visible which books are photographed

  • Include your name and contact details (phone or mobile number and email to be contacted on if it is not same as the one you are sending from)

2. Await further instruction or confirmation from us

Once we have reviewed the information and pictures in your email we will contact you to confirm if we will accept one, any, or all, of the books to be sent to us. We will also let you know how much we estimate to pay for your books if we think they are in a saleable condition. This does not mean we accept to pay for the books, please see further information on step 3, as well as more details in the Preloved Books Service Terms and Conditions below.

If we are happy to receive your books this means we are happy to receive them for inspection of its saleable condition and value. At this point we will request delivery information from you and send you a postage box with a prepaid label for you to use to send your books to us.

Please be advised that we will only accept the books that we have specifically agreed to receive. If you send us other books that we have not specifically agreed to receive, we will not process these and we take no responsibility for having these returned to you. This is further detailed in the Preloved Books Service Terms and Conditions below.

3. We receive your books

When we receive the books we have agreed for you to send us, we will inspect them to ensure they are true to the description and pictures you have provided us in your initial email, and that they are in a saleable condition.

If we are happy with the books we will contact you to confirm that we agree to pay you for one, any, or all books, as well as the amount we will pay you. We will then process the payment within 3 working days.

Please be advised that we will not pay you for any books until we have confirmed that we are happy to accept your books and how much we will pay you for your books. This is further detailed in the Preloved Books Service Terms and Conditions below.

If we do not accept one or any of the books you have sent us due to the book not being as described by you or the book not being in a saleable condition, we will return your book, or books, to you within 14 days of confirming to you that we will not accept your books and that we will not pay you for them. We will return the book, or books, to the address provided to us in step 2 unless you have told us otherwise.

If you do not notify us within this time, you may not be able to claim for your lost or damaged items. We will investigate the validity of any claim, and where valid, we will raise a claim with the courier or Royal Mail. We will notify you in writing of the outcome of our investigation or claim (as applicable). If your claim is successful, we will pay you an amount equal to the valuation of the missing items.
